ARLINGTON, Va. -- The following information was released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA):
In response to the summit held today by the White House, "Spectrum Auctions: Unlocking the Innovative Potential of Wireless Broadband," the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)' released the following statement:
"We commend the White House for hosting an event to emphasize the economic benefits of auctioning underutilized spectrum. CEA strongly supports efforts by both the White House and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to devote more spectrum to wireless high-speed Internet services. Additional spectrum is key to our national competitiveness and the future of technology innovation.
"Today's letter in support of such action, signed by 112 economists, should end the debate over whether incentive-based spectrum auctions will be good for our economy. CEA agrees with these economists that given 'changing technologies, demand, and relative costs, old spectrum allocations based on out-of-date assumptions have become inefficient, wasting valuable spectrum resources.' CEA also agrees that 'transitioning spectrum to more valuable uses is relatively easy,' and that we can no longer permit holders of legacy spectrum to also hold hostage our nation's broadband future.
"CEA believes incentive auctions will create jobs, enhance innovation, reduce the national debt and amply compensate the broadcasters. We look forward to working closely with the Administration and the FCC to help ensure competitive broadband and innovative new wireless services are available to all Americans."
