Armando Hernandez and Adrian Cruz say they were hanging out -- notdrinking, not causing problems -- in Humboldt Park Tuesday night, andthat the problems started when police showed up.
Hernandez, 19, said officers in an unmarked car told them toleave. Cruz, 22, said one cop became angry when they told him it was9:36 p.m., not 11 p.m. -- when the park closes.
Both men say they were roughed up, handcuffed and taken to theShakespeare District station. There the two say they endured 45minutes of verbal abuse, punches to the back and stomach, slaps tothe face, and repeated whacks from a nightstick.
Hernandez's cell phone recorded some of the incident.
The offense? Drinking in a park, police told them. The two denyit.
The men, both of Humboldt Park, were taken to the hospital bypolice for an exam and tetanus shots. They've hired an attorney.
Police said an investigation has been launched.
