Qld: Beattie says taxes responsible for house price jumps
Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says the new inquiry into housing affordability shouldlook at the impact of federal taxes on house prices.
Mr BEATTIE says the introduction of the GST imposed new taxes on labour and buildingmaterials and effectively pushed the cost of houses up by 10 per cent.
He's told reporters the federal government under Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has donemore than any other government in the history of Australia to increase the cost of housing.
Federal Treasurer PETER COSTELLO has announced the Productivity Commission will inquireinto barriers to home ownership for first-time buyers.
He says the inquiry will report by March 31 next year.
